Estate, Business and Elder Law Planning Firm

“We help prosperous people protect their families,  their assets and their businesses”

Brenda GeigerI’m Brenda Geiger, the managing attorney of the Geiger Law Office in Carlsbad, California. I’m so glad you decided to visit our website and I want to share with you some ways I can be of assistance to you before we even meet. I have published many articles and five books on estate planning, business law and elder law to help guide you through protecting your family, your assets and even a business.Over the years, I have been asked about certain topics over and over again, so I saw the need to share my knowledge on estate, elder law and business planning with clients to help better prepare them and to act as a guide to help translate these complex areas of the law. All of my books and guides were drafted with one thing in mind: I wanted to take the complex and make it simple to understand.

My Estate Planning basics book is titled “Secrets of Great Estate Planning,” and it’s chock-full of mistakes to avoid, examples and strategies on how to plan your estate the right way. To request your free copy, click here.

I also co-authored a book on elder law for long-term care planning with attorney Bradley Erdosi. That book is titled “How to Avoid the Catastrophic Costs and Affects of Long Term Care, a California Elder Law Guide.” We both saw a high need to provide relevant information to help families dealing with long-term care issues for an aging parent. Nursing home costs are at an all-time high and families who prepare in advance have many more options than those who wait for a crisis to occur. To request your free copy, click the link.

In 2013, I released a book on business planning titled “Protecting You and Your Business, a Practical Guide for California Business Owners.” There are many common mistakes I’ve seen over and over again by business owners, and I wrote this book to help you avoid those mistakes. In 2015, I published “Protect Your Children’s IRA Inheritance ” which was inspired by a recent US Supreme Court case in June 2014, the Clark case. Many people have no idea that their large IRAs, 401(k)s or defined benefit plans could be taken from their children by a divorce, lawsuit, bankruptcy, or other creditor when they inherit these accounts. Those with special needs beneficiaries need to pay particular care to this issue because leaving a child who has a disability on their beneficiary form could bump that child off of government benefits when they inherit the account. There is a solution to these problems and I outline the solution in this cutting-edge strategic book on protecting your retirement accounts and ensuring the stretch out of these accounts. Although we serve a wide range of clients within the estate planning, elder law and business law practice areas, the common thread throughout the practice is protection–protection of family members, children, parents, assets, and business interests in the Carlsbad and greater San Diego area. This may surprise you, but over 70% of all Americans have done no estate planning whatsoever. This means that if something happens to them, their family could be at risk for paying a lot more money to the government, tying their estates up in court for a long time and also that their children or other heirs have no protection around the assets that they inherit. And for those with minor children, their children could also be raised by someone they never wanted and their assets delivered to their children at the tender age of 18 through a probate.
